The earlier, the better

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends scheduling your child’s initial orthodontic exam as early as age seven, so your orthodontist can identify any existing or potential concerns with your child’s teeth or jaw. Many of these issues can be treated early, eliminating the need for costly or more serious treatments later in life.

A picture is worth a thousand words

Most children have a mix of both primary (baby) teeth and permanent teeth at this age. When you schedule a free initial evaluation for your child, we’ll use digital X-rays, a 3D mouth scan, and photographs of their developing teeth to fully assess their needs – all at no charge. If early treatment is needed but your child’s permanent teeth have not all come in yet, we may suggest a two-phase approach. Or better yet, we may see that your child’s mouth looks great! No matter what, you can always count on us to give you an honest diagnosis.

Using the two-phase approach

If two-phase treatment is necessary, the first phase will address your child’s tooth and jaw problems in hopes of preventing more serious issues from developing in the future. This first phase may take 12-18 months to complete, but it often decreases the amount of time needed in the second phase. Once all their permanent teeth are in, it’s time to begin your child’s second phase of treatment, which typically lasts up to two years. Think of it as making the effort now to avoid more serious treatments later.

One phase of treatment usually does the job

Typically, a single-phase orthodontic approach that begins when your child has all their permanent teeth eliminates the need for additional years of treatment. Every child’s path to a beautiful smile is different, but you can trust Dietmeier Orthodontics to recommend treatments at the optimal time for your child.

A teenage tradition

Orthodontic treatment is practically a rite of passage for teens. What better time to give your teen a beautiful smile that improves their self-esteem and builds their confidence? With most of their permanent teeth already in, the teenage years are an ideal time to get started with orthodontic treatment, especially those who feel self-conscious about their less-than-perfect smile.

Thankfully, the awkward braces of the past are long gone! Today’s modern braces are smaller, sleeker, and far more comfortable. Metal or ceramic braces remain a popular choice with teens, and they are still one of the most effective and efficient ways to align teeth and jaws.

Invisalign® clear aligners are another popular orthodontic treatment option for teens to consider. Teens love them because they are practically invisible–their friends may not even realize they are wearing them! Invisalign aligners are also removable, allowing your teen to take them out when eating their favorite food, playing sports or a musical instrument, going to prom, or any other special activity.

Teenage teeth respond quickly

Your teen may move at a snail’s pace when you ask them to clean their room, but their teeth are another story! The average orthodontic treatment time for teens is just 24 months – some teens may need more time, and others will need less. The team at Dietmeier Orthodontics will keep you and your teen informed every step of the way.
